How Much Do Surrogates Make per Baby?

Surrogate pay is not determined per baby, as the surrogate is not being paid for the baby. Surrogates are compensated and reimbursed for their time, commitment and effort. However, if a surrogate carries multiples, she will receive an additional $5,000 per multiple for the additional physical and emotional demands.

Why Do Surrogates Get Paid So Much?

Surrogates receive substantial compensation because they're making a nearly year-long commitment that's both physically and emotionally demanding. The pay reflects the significant impact on their daily life, family responsibilities and the extraordinary service they're providing to help build families.

"Surrogacy is hard work, and you're making a big commitment for yourself and your family,” said Brittany, one of our surrogacy specialists and a repeat surrogate. “You're putting a lot of things aside in your life to help somebody else grow their family.”

What Is the Highest Compensation for a Surrogate Mother?

Our experienced surrogates can earn $60,000 - $110,000+ for their service.  Second-time surrogates make more than first-time surrogates because of their proven track record of successful pregnancies and their familiarity with the surrogacy process.

You can calculate your average surrogate pay rate using our surrogate compensation calculator.

Can Surrogates Negotiate Their Pay?

Yes! At American Surrogacy, we believe in meeting each surrogate where she's at regarding compensation. Unlike agencies with fixed payment structures, we work with you to create a compensation package that feels fair for your unique circumstances and needs.

Are Surrogate Payments Taxable Income?

Whether surrogate compensation is taxable depends on how it's structured in your contract and your state's tax laws. Payments might be considered taxable income, gifts or reimbursements. We recommend talking to your attorney and a qualified tax professional.

Do All Surrogates Get Paid?

Yes, surrogates typically receive financial compensation for their time, effort and commitment to carrying a pregnancy. It’s important to note that surrogacy laws and compensation can vary by state, so the specifics may depend on your location.

Do Surrogates Get Paid if They Miscarry?

Surrogates are paid in monthly installments. If a surrogate miscarries, they will only be paid through the month they carried the baby. If they choose to try again, they will begin receiving monthly base payments again once pregnancy is confirmed.

Who Pays for a Surrogate’s Medical Bills?

The intended parents cover all of your medical expenses through our agency. This includes insurance coverage and any additional expenses not covered.

Who Pays for a Surrogate’s Travel Expenses?

The intended parents cover all of your travel expenses through our agency, including trips to medical appointments and visits with them.

Do I Need to Have Insurance to Cover Surrogacy?

No. If your health insurance plan does not cover surrogacy or you do not have health insurance, an insurance plan will be provided to you.

Why Do Surrogates Do It?

Some surrogates are motivated by a sense of altruism, wanting to provide a life-changing gift to individuals or couples struggling with infertility or medical conditions that prevent them from carrying a pregnancy.

Surrogates also receive compensation for their time, effort and commitment, which can be a significant incentive. The decision to become a surrogate is deeply personal and reflects a combination of considerations.
